    On 16th August 1964, at the Central Lenin Stadium baths in Moscow, there began the fifth championships for men's and the third championships for women's teams for swimming, organised by the International Sports Union of Railway Workers. Taking part are representatives of nine countries: Bulgaria, East Germany, Poland, Rumania, Finland, France, Czechoslovakia, Sweden and the Soviet Union.

    To the sound of fanfares, the captains of the various teams haul up the championship's flag. The signal is given for the start of the first preliminary swim for the women's 100-metres free style. The winner is Root (USSR) in the time of 1 min. 09.0 secs.

    But a better time over this distance was shown in the third round by Vernerova (Czechoslovakia) - 1 min. 07.8 secs.

    In the preliminary rounds over this distance for men, the best time was shown by Gusev (USSR) - 57.8 secs.

    In the final of the women's relay, 4 x 100 metres free-style, the winner was the Soviet team, in the time of 4 mins. 40.5 secs.

    In the men's relay, 4 x 200 metres, the East German sportsmen were first with the time of 9 mins. 05.6 secs.

    The competitions are continuing.
