  • Description

In Tokyo, the foreign ministers of Japan and West Germany have been discussing ways to achieve world disarmament. Mr. Iichiro Hatoyama and Herr Hans-Dietrich Genscher agreed that their two countries should make a joint effort to assist moves towards global peace. During his visit to Japan Herr Genscher also held talks on Tuesday (11 October) with Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda.

SYNOPSIS: Herr Genscher was briefed on Prime Minister Fukuda's trip so Southeast Asia in August. Mr. Hatoyama told him that Japan would not seek economic domination in the area and had no intentions of becoming a world power again, although it did want to strengthen economic and cultural ties.

Before the talks with Prime Minister Fukuda, Herr Genscher and Mr. Hatoyama met for three and a half hours to discuss various major topics including disarmament.

Agreement was reached that money saved in the event of world disarmament should be offered to developing countries to improve economic conditions and develop natural resources. They also agreed that all arms trade should be suspended, and expressed their hopes for a successful conclusion to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks between the United States and Soviet Union.

Herr Genscher stressed that good relations between the Soviet Union and West Germany were indispensable to peace in Europe.
