Background: VISNEWS filmed Apl 12 the proclamations ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica for the first two saints elevated in the reign of the present Pope.
Twenty cardinals, sixty bishops, leaders of the Franciscan Order and delegations from many countries watched John 23 announce the canonization of the Italian Friar Carlo da Sezze and the Spanish nun Joaquina de Vedruna de Mas.
Draped with red and gold, the massive church was at its most impressive. The imposing ceremony lasted throughout the morning. A huge representation of the two new saints hung from the balcony overlooking the Square.
The Pope entered in procession to a triumphal march played on silver trumpets. He spoke the traditional formula of elevation to the sainthood, appealed to the new saints to aid unity in the Christian world and peace among men.
Two Italian women and two Spanish women present were said to have been cured by the intercession of the new saints. These cures were pronounced miraculous.
Saint Vedruna de Mas (1783-1854) was founder of the Carmelite Sisters of Charity whose feast day will be May 22. Da Sezze (1630-1670) who won a reputation for piety will be venerated each January 7. He was a mystic religious poet, although almost illiterate..He is given credit by the Vatican for some imposing miracles.
