  • Description

In a move seen as an attempt to broaden Soviet influence in the Arab world, Soviet Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin became the first Soviet Premier to visit Tunisia on Thursday (15 May).

He flew in from Libya after a visit that was also a precedent. Mr. Kosygin was welcomed by Tunisia's President Habib Bourguiba and he later pledged Soviet solidarity with the Arab cause.

He said Moscow supported the Arab struggle to liberate Israeli-occupied territory.

The Russians are anxious to enlist Arab support for their policy of reconvening the Geneva Conference and guaranteeing Israel's pre-1967 frontiers in return for the creation of a Palestinian State. They are believed to want a peaceful solution to the deadlock in the Middle East.

Mr. Kosygin was given a rousing welcome in the Tunisian capital, Tunis.
