HUSSEIN EL SHARIFF EL HINDI, SAID IN KHARTOUM TODAY (SUNDAY). PRESIDENT ISMAIL EL AZHARI INAUGURATED THE FIRST STAGE OF THE DAM IN A CEREMONY AT ROSEIRES YESTERDAY ATTENDED ALSO BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM BRITAIN, ITALY AND A NUMBER OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

    SPEAKING ON HIS RETURN FROM THE INAUGURATION CEREMONY, THE IRRIGATION MINISTER SAID THE PROJECT NEEDED A NETWORK OF CANALS AND LAND PREPARATION SCHEMES TO MAKE IT EFFECTIVE.THE DAM, DESIGNED IN LONDON AND PARIS, WAS BUILT BY AN ITALIAN FIRM AND FINANCED BY WEST GERMANY AND THE WORLD BANK.

    THE COST OF THE FIRST STAGE, CAPABLE OF IRRIGATING 1,500,000 ACRES (600,000 HECTARES) IN THE BLUE NILE AREA, WAS GBP21,000,000 STERLING. THE SECOND STAGE WILL BE COST ANOTHER GBP10,000,000 STERLING, AND THE IRRIGATED AREA WILL THEN REACH 2,500,000 ACRES (1,000,000 HECTARES). THERE WILL ALSO BE A SEVEN-TURBINE POWER STATION PRODUCING 175 MEGAWATTS.

    PRESIDENT ISMAIL EL AZAHRI SAID ON HIS RETURN TO KHARTOUM TODAY THAT 3,000 ENGINEERS AND WORKERS HAD WORKED ON THE DAM FOR 29,000,000 HOURS.
