    In an interview published in a Belgian newspaper on Thursday (Feb 10) President Mobutu Sese Sake, of the Zaire Republic, said Cardinal Malula, Archbishop of Kinshasa, would pay "very dearly indeed" for alleged betrayal of Zaire's national cause. The Cardinal, who was recently ordered to leave his Kinshasa residence within 48 hours, is believed awaiting trial on charges of subversion, following publication in January of an outspoken latter on Zaire's African authenticity campaign.

    SYNOPSIS: Cardinal Malula of Kinshasa, seen hers in the Vatican at his investure as a Cardinal in 1969, has been accused of subversion by President Mobutu Sese Seko.

    The Cardinal, believed now awaiting trial in Kinshasa, issued an outspoken pastoral letter last month in which he criticised Zaire's African Authenticity campaign. A Belgian newspaper report has said that President Mobutu had accused the Cardinal Mobutu had accused the Cardinal of several times betraying Zaire's national cause. The report quoted the President as saying the Cardinal would pay "very dearly indeed" for his actions.

    The African Authenticity campaign is designed to prove that Zaire is genuinely independent, and to mentally "de-colonize" its inhabitants.
