  • Description

A three-day conference of the West African Rice Development Association opened in the Ivory Coast capital, Abidjan, on Monday (December 17) with an appeal by the Ivory Coast Agriculture Minister for further measures to combat drought.

    M. Abdoullye Sawadogo proposed the creation of a special African Association, modelled on the Association for the Regional Development of West Africa, to take short, medium and long term measures to combat drought.

The Ivory Coast Minister emphasised the importance of creating an Institute for Agronomic Research for the regions bordering the Sahara to complement existing national and international organisations.

The conference followed a three day meeting of the Scientific and Technical Committee of the Rice Association on Research into means of increasing West African rice production.

Finance meetings were also held with representatives of Britain, France, Holland, the United States, the United Nations development programme and the independent Ford Foundation.

Twelve countries were represented at both conferences: Dahomey, Zambia, Ghana, Liberia, ???li, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo and the Ivory Coast.

On Tuesday (December 18) the African Development Bank granted the Ghana National Investment Bank a loan of 900,000 pounds sterling for rice growing projects in the north of the country.
