  • Description

Talks between senior military leaders from India and Pakistan ran into trouble on Sunday (22 October), producing a delay in settling a new truce line between the two nations in Kashmir.

The difficulties apparently have to be sorted out at higher level. The deadlock came only four days after a settlement seemed certain. It had been announced that the negotiators had come to a definite agreement, and that surveyors were drawing up maps based on their proposals.

The delay in agreement is also holding up troop withdrawals from occupied ground elsewhere along the Indo-Pakistan frontier. Observers now expect the military leaders of each country to confer directly by telephone before further delegate talks are held.
