  • Description

General de Gaulle arrived back in Paris on Dec. 12th from Algeria, where his tour had been shortened by one day, following the riots in which at least 118 people - most of them Muslims - had been killed.

He was met by Premier Debre and the entire Cabinet. But there was only a very small group of supporters present to watch his arrival, which was marked by complete absence of crowds or demonstrations of any kind.

All he said before driving off with M. Debre was: "There is only one policy for Algeria: it is the right one and we must follow it". As he left Algeria he sent a message to his Algerian Affairs Minister M. Joxe, in which he was reported to have reaffirmed his belief in his present Algerian policy - including the referendum early in the New Year.
