  • Description

Crowds of demonstrators occupied a square in Rome on Thursday (2 October), to hear speeches by trade union leaders condemning the Franco regime for the execution of five urban guerrillas last weekend.

The crowds waved banners and chanted anti-Franco slogans. One of the major speeches of the day was delivered by Garcia Duarte, a Spanish trade union leader in exile in Italy.

Also addressing the demonstrators were Italian trade union leaders and members of Italian political parties. They lambasted the Spanish Government for its attitude towards organised labour.

On Thursday, a spokesman for the Basque Nationalist delegation which left Spain last week to promote an anti-Franco campaign throughout Europe, said the Pontiff's condemnation of the executions had been appreciated in the Basque country, but that it had not been enough.

On 27 September, demonstrators in Rome, enraged by the executions, hurled molotov cocktails at the Spanish Embassy. Police fired tear-gas to disperse the demonstrators who gathered after a march through Rome by ten thousand leftists.
