Background: Delegates from European and African universities met on Monday (22 March) in Lome to discuss Euro-African relations. The main objective of the four-day colloquium, organised the Club d'Afrique under the presidency of Professor Ampa Johnson from Benin, is to promote a North-South dialogue between developed African countries. The debate was opened by Mr. Boumbera Alassounouma, Togolese Minister of Education and Scientific Research. He told delegates from France, Italy and 16 member-states of the Economic Community of West Africa that Euro-African relations will improve if developed countries implement their promises to under-developed African states. But first of all, Mr. Alassounouma added, African states must co-operate among themselves, in order to strengthen their own position within the North-South dialogue. Founded in October 1980 by personalities from the cultural, artistic, diplomatic and scientific fields, Club d'Afrique sets out to "contribute, within the North-South dialogue, to a new society where members by tackling international problems, will further the development of the African continent".
