    PRO-HINDU STUDENTS WENT ON THE RAMPAGE IN DELHI YESTERDAY (MONDAY) SMASHING ENGLISH-LANGUAGE SIGNBOARDS AND ADVERTISING HOARDINGS. THEY WERE PROTESTING AGAINST GOVERNMENT MOVES TO RETAIN ENGLISH AS AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ALONGSIDE HINDI.

    MANY COLLEGES WERE CLOSED AS STUDENTS WENT ON STRIKE DESPITE A STAY AT WORK CALL BY THE DELHI STUDENTS' UNION.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS, SHOUTING ANTI-ENGLISH SLOGANS AND DEMANDS FOR IMMEDIATE ENFORCEMENT OF HINDI AS THE NATIONAL LANGUAGE, TOURED COLLEGES ON THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS GATHERING STRENGTH BEFORE BEGINNING THEIR ATTACK ON ENGLISH SIGNS.

    MANY SHOPKEEPERS PULLED DOWN THEIR SIGNBOARDS AS THE DEMONSTRATORS APPROACHED.

    YESTERDAY'S DEMONSTRATIONS WERE A CONTINUATION OF THE PRO-HINDI AGITATION THAT HAS SWEPT ACROSS NORTHERN INDIA IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS FOLLOWING INTRODUCTION IN THE CENTRAL PARLIAMENT OF A BILL TO RETAIN ENGLISH AS AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE.
