  • Description

THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MR. WILSON, TODAY FIRMLY REPUDIATED ALLEGATIONS THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S SUPPORT FOR THE UNITED STATES IN THE VIETNAM CONFLICT WAS PROMPTED BY UNITED STATES SUPPORT FOR THE POUND.

MR. WILSON WAS ADDRESSING THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE LABOUR PARTY AT BLACKPOOL DURING DEBATE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS. LEFTWING MEMBERS OF THE PARTY HAD APPEALED TO THE GOVERNMENT TO CONDEMN AMERICAN BOMBING RAIDS ON NORTH VIETNAM AND TO DISSOCIATE ITSELF FROM THE UNITED STATES POLICY ON VIETNAM.

IN A BALLOT THE GOVERNMENT RECEIVED THE OVERWHELMING SUPPORT OF PARTY DELEGATES, ALTHOUGH THE LARGE TRANSPORT AND GENERAL WORKERS' UNION, WITH A STRENGTH OF ONE MILLION VOTES, VOTED AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT. FINAL VOTING FIGURES WERE FOUR MILLION IN FAVOUR OF THE GOVERNMENT AND TWO MILLION AGAINST.

ANOTHER BIG DEBATE FOR THE CONFERENCE TODAY WAS ON IMMIGRATION, AND MUCH OF THE DISCUSSION WAS CENTRED AROUND THE RECENT RESTRICTIONS ANNOUNCED BY THE GOVERNMENT.

MR. ROBERT MELLISH, A JUNIOR MINISTER, APPEALED TO DELEGATES TO SUPPORT THE MEASURES AND HELD TOWARDS INTEGRATION OF IMMIGRANTS.
