    JAPANESE POLICE CLASHED WITH MILITANT LEFT-WING STUDENTS AT TOKYO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ON WEDNESDAY IN A RUNNING BATTLE THAT LEFT 114 POLICE INJURED, ONE SERIOUSLY.FORTY-TWO STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED AND 31 WERE TREATED IN HOSPITAL FOR INJURIES.

    THE STUDENTS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE DEPARTURE OF THE JAPANESE FOREIGN MINISTER, ETSUSABURO SHIINA, FOR SEOUL TO TAKE PART IN TALKS ON NORMALISING RELATIONS BETWEEN JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA.

    POLICE USED HOSES AND CLUBS TO BEAT BACK THE STUDENTS WHO HURLED STONES AT THE POLICE AND TRIED TO BREAK OUT OF A BLOCKADING RING OF ARMOURED TRUCKS.ASSAULT PARTIES OF STUDENTS WEARING PROTECTIVE HELMETS LED THE DEMONSTRATORS.

    POLICE ATTEMPTS TO QUELL THE RIOTS WERE HAMPERED BY THE EFFORTS OF ULTRA-NATIONALIST COUNTER-DEMONSTRATORS AN ANTI-COMMUNISTS TO JOIN IN THE FIGHTING.

    INSIDE THE AIRPORT, RIVAL GROUPS OF LEFTISTS AND RIGHTISTS DISTRIBUTED LEAFLETS FOR AND AGAINST MR.SHIINA'S VISIT.

    THE FOREIGN MINISTER'S CAR BY-PASSED THE DEMONSTRATION AS HE DROVE TO THE AIRPORT.
