Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere on Monday (19 June) began a three-day inspection of the work on the 1,200-mile (1,900 km) Tanzem railway, which will link the port of Dar Fs Salaem with Zambia.

Work on the railway is being financed by a 169-million sterling interest-free lean from the People's Republic of China. Repayments on the lean, which will be shared equally by Tanzania and Zambia, do not start until 1983 and are then spread over 30 years. Work on the railway is expected to be completed by the end of 1975.

Speaking during an inspection of the railway at Ifakara, about 200 miles (320 kms) southwest of Dar Es Salam, President Nyerere praised the Chinese experts and urged the people of Tanzania and Zambia to leave about construction work, as that they could take over when the Chinese left. Some 15,000 Chinese technicians are working an the project.

As part of his inspection, the President took a 50-mile (80 km) ride on the railway, on which more than a quarter of the track-laying has been completed.
