    WORK IS CONTINUING ON THE "HELL RUN" ROAD TO LINK ZAMBIA WITH TANZANIA IN PREPARATION FOR ATARRING THE SECTION BETWEEN SERENJE AND MPIKA. SO FAR ONLY 18 MILES OF THE ROAD HAS BEEN TARRED AT LUKULU.

    WORK HAS BEEN HAMPERED BY A WATER SHORTAGE AND LABOUR UNREST. WORKERS HAVE BEEN ON STRIKE THIS MONTH FOR MORE PAY.

    THE ORIGINAL TARGET WAS FOR THE WHOLE OF THE 530-MILE ROADWAY TO HAVE BEEN TARRED IN TWO YEARS TIME, BUT IT IS NOW DOUBTFUL WHETHER IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO KEEP TO THIS SCHEDULE.

    THE COST OF THE PROJECT IS ESTIMATED AT GBP2,300,000. THE COST OF THE CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN MET BY A LOAN OF GBP600,000 FROM THE WORLD BANK.

    WHEN THE ROAD IS FINALLY COMPLETED, IT WILL BEJOJOINTLY OWNED BY THE ZAMBIAN AND TANZANIAN GOVERNMENTS.
