  • Description

Honduran authorities reported that troops of El Salvador invaded Honduras on Monday night (14 July) and that El Salvador war planes had bombed cities south and west of Tegucigalpa, the capital.

In San Salvador, capital of El Salvador, Foreign Minister Jose Guerrero said that his country was not at war with Honduras but, as he put it, there was a state of aggression on the part of Honduras.

In Washington D.C. the Organization of American States (OAS) met for a half hour and then voted to send a seven man team of ambassadors to the capitals of El Salvador and Honduras to meet with the presidents of those two countries. Heading the delegation is the Ambassador for Nicaragua and the dean of the Washington diplomatic Corps, Guillermo Sevill-SaCasa. He said, "The last news I received is bad news, but I am still confident that the governments involved will give the best cooperation to the members of the commission."
The Honduran Ambassador Midence Soto said in Washington that it was definitely El Salvador that had invaded the territory of Honduras. He also said that he was hopeful that the shooting would soon stop.
