    THE FIRE CHIEF OF AMERICUS, MR. H.K. HENDERSON, WHO IS A DEACON IN THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, LED A GROUP OF CHURCH OFFICIALS IN BLOCKING THE WAY OF 12 CIVIL RIGHTS WORKERS WHO ATTEMPTED TO ATTEND SERVICES THERE. AS THE CIVIL RIGHTS WORKERS KNELT ON THE CHURCH STEPS, HENDERSON TOLD THEM: "IF YOU HAD COME HERE TO WORSHIP, YOU'D HAVE BEEN WELCOME, BUT YOU CAME HERE TODAY FOR PUBLICITY. YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME AND MINE".

    EARLIER, A SIMILAR INCIDENT TOOK PLACE ON THE STEPS OF THE FIRST METHODIST CHURCH WHEN SIX RIGHTS WORKERS WERE TOLD THEY COULD NOT GO INSIDE.

    THE ATTEMPTS TO ATTEND CHURCH WERE PART OF A SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS AIMED AT WINNING CONCESSIONS FOR NEGROES IN THE TOWN.
