Berlin remains a divided city this Christmas. The new break- through in East-West negotiations over?

  • Description

Berlin remains a divided city this Christmas. The new break- through in East-West negotiations over the city comes too late for the Berlin wall to be opened this Christmas. So once again, West Berliners will be unable to see their relatives in the East.

Visnews Cameraman Guenter Lahmann, who filmed this coverage of Christmas proportions in Berlin, reports that checkpoints had been provided across the border in East Berlin in readiness for Christmas traffic. But the latest agreement between East and West Germany came too late for the East Germans to make the necessary arrangements to open the wall.

SYNOPSIS: Bright lights and heavy traffic characterise the Christmas rush in West Berlin this week. But once again Berlin remains a divided city this Christmas. Though East and West German made history earlier this month by reaching an agreement -- their first over access to the city, it cams the late for West Berliners to be issued with passes to visit relatives in the East. The East Germans said they had insufficient time to make the necessary arrangements.

It was a special disappointment since efforts had been made by the East Berlin authorities to prepare crossing points in the Wall. The newly-signed agreement will allow West Berliners to cross the wall next year -- for the first time since 1966. They'll also be allowed into the rest of East Germany, which has been closed to than since 1952.
