  • Description

A prominent leader of the Eritrean Liberation Front -- the group which is leading the uprising in the Ethiopian province of Eritrea -- on Tuesday (18 February) rejected a ceasefire proposal put forward by the Sudanese government aimed at bringing peace in the area.

The Eritrean leader, Mr. Othman Saleh Sabeh, said his movement rejected the proposed plan because it wanted recognition of Eritrea's right to be independent of the Ethiopian government in Addis Ababa before it would negotiate an end to the fighting new continuing spasmodically around the Eritrean capital of Asmara.

Mr. Sabeh, speaking in Beirut, thanked Sudan's President Nimeiry for the work and goodwill he had put into the ceasefire effort, but said the peace plan, as it stood, was totally rejected.
