Background: Delegates from 28 countries began a two-day conference in Paris on Thursday (11 September) to discuss ways of increasing pressure on South Africa to withdraw from Namibia (South West Africa).

SYNOPSIS: Among delegates at the conference, held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, were Sam Nujoma, the Namibian guerrilla leader, the Cuban Foreign Minister, Isidoro Malmierca Peoli and the President of the UN Council for Namibia, Paul Lusaka. The UNESCO Director General, Mr. Amadaou M'Bow of Senegal, also addressed the conference.

Zimbabwe's Prime Minister, Mr Robert Mugabe, in a message to the conference, expressed total support for what he called the heroic struggle of Namibians against the abhorrent policies imposed on them by South Africa. A spokesman for the guerrilla group, SWAPO, the South West African People's Organisation, said the conference came at a crucial time for his country, with Pretoria now coming under almost unbearable pressure to withdraw from the territory. The five hundred delegates at the conference include trade unionists, churchmen and anti-apartheid campaigners.
