    THOUSANDS OF BANNER-CARRYING TRANSIT STRIKERS PICKETED NEW YORK CITY HALL YESTERDAY (MONDAY), SOME OF THEM IN CONVICT COSTUMES. THEY WERE PROTESTING AGAINST DECISIONS BY STATE SUPREME COURT JUSTICE ABRAHAM GELLER WHO IS ASKING 322,000 DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP122,000 STERLING) A DAY STRIKE DAMAGES AND HAS HELD THE STRIKING AFL_C10 TRANSPORT WORKERS AND A SMALL BUS DRIVERS' UNION IN CONTEMPT.

    AS THE STRIKE ENTERED ITS TENTH DAY, A RECORD 850,000 CARS - 250,000 MORE THAN NORMAL - EDGED THEIR WAY INTO MANHATTAN. THE TRANSIT AUTHORITY PRESSED AHEAD WITH ITS DEMAND FOR 3.2 MILLION DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP1,220,000 STERLING) IN FINES AGAINST THE STRIKING SUBWAY AND BUS UNIONS.

    WHILE THE HEARING WAS GOING ON BEFORE JUSTICE GELLER, THOUSANDS OF STRIKERS PICKETED CITY HALL. THEIR RANKS WERE SWELLED BY OTHER UNION MEMBERS, PROTESTING AGAINST THE GAOLING OF NINE UNION LEADERS AND THE IMPOSITION OF FINES.

    THEY MARCHED IN ORDERLY FASHION SHOUTING "WE WANT QUILL." UNION PRESIDENT MICHAEL QUILL WAS SENT TO GAOL ON JANUARY 4 AND SUFFERED A HEART ATTACK ON HIS FIRST DAY IN GAOL.

    MR. DOUGLAS MACMAHON, ACTING IN MR. QUILL'S PLACE AS UNION LEADER, DREW BOOS FROM THE DEMONSTRATORS WHEN HE REFERRED TO MAYOR JOHN LINDSAY IN A SPEECH.
