  • Description

Since the collapse of the French Cabinet, earlier in the week, President Coty has been in consultation with various members of parliament in an attempt to find a successor to M. Bourges-Manoury whose Government was defeated.

Today, he saw M. Laniel, Guy Kollet, Edgar Faure, Mendes-France, Emile Roche, M. Meoyo, M. Bascari Monsservin (Representing M. Pinay), M. Bureau and R. Daladier as they arrived at the Elysees amid a battery of photographers.

The collapse of the former Government was precipitated by M. Soustelle, the Caullist leader, on the vexed question of Algiers. The fact that M. Coty did not immediately accept the cabinet's resignation was because this would have meant the end of special powers in Algiers.

When the new Government is formed it must start with a renewal of there powers from the Assembly.
