  • Description

IN SOUTH VIETNAM AMERICAN MILITARY POLICE ARE USING A SPECIALLY TRAINED DOG TO SNIFF OUT MARIJUANA. THE DOG, NAMED KAHN, IS THE ONLY TRAINED ONE THE ARMY HAS IN SOUTH VIETNAM.

MARIJUANA IS A PROBLEM AMONG THE AMERICAN TROOPS. OFFICIALS SAY IT IS INVOLVED IN MORE THAN HALF THE CASES HANDLED BY THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DIVISION OF THE MILITARY POLICE.

KAHN IS FLOWN ALL OVER SOUTH VIETNAM TO SNIFF OUT MARIJUANA. THERE IS SUCH A DEMAND FROM COMMANDING OFFICERS FOR KHAN'S SERVICES THAT BOOKINGS ARE MADE FOR HIM WEEKS IN ADVANCE. KAHN IS WALKED THROUGH COMPANY AREAS WHILE THE SOLDIERS ARE OUT. IN HIS FIRST SIX WEEKS IN SOUTH VIETNAM, KHAN DISCOVERED 37 CACHES OF MARIJUANA.

ARMY OFFICIALS SAY THAT MANY SOLDIERS EXPERIMENT WITH MARIJUANA WHILE THEY ARE IN SOUTH VIETNAM, BUT THE STEADY USERS TEND TO BE THOSE WHO USED IT BEFORE THEY WENT INTO THE ARMY. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM IS COMPOUNDED BY MARIJUANA BEING SO CHEAP AND EASILY AVAILABLE THERE.

INCOMING TROOPS ARE WARNED ABOUT MARIJUANA. THEY ARE TOLD THAT THE MAXIMUM PENALTY FOR BEING CAUGHT WITH THE DRUG IS 10 YEARS IN JAIL.

THE U.S. ARMY IS SPECIALLY CONCERNED WITH THE USE OF MARIJUANA IN THE FIELD, SAYING THAT IT WILL SERIOUSLY AFFECT A MAN'S QUALITY TO FIGHT.

PATROLS CRUISING THE STREETS OF SAIGON ARE CONSTANTLY ON THE ALERT FOR SOLDIERS WITH MARIJUANA. BUT THE MEN ON THE PATROLS SAY THAT IT IS SO EASY TO OBTAIN, IT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP THE FLOW.
