  • Description

New York transport officials say that travelling should be FUN (a statement greeted by grimaces from the rush-hour-weary business folk). But the same transport officials are setting out to prove it.

Each morning this summer, special subway excursions known as Rockaway Specials are setting out from 8th Avenue and 42nd Street. They are loaded with New Yorkers in search of fun by the sea at nearby Rockaway -- and with clowns...music...balloons for the kiddies. Passengers get free entertainment on the January and a handful of tickets for rides on the funfair at the other end. Their return train sets back at 3.30 each afternoon -- much to the regret of the youngsters, we guess. Cost for the round trip: one dollar, 55 cents. It's hoped that these deluxe expresses will tap another source of revenue for the transport department.

Another thing distinguishes these Rockaway Specials -- subways have been operating for nearly 55 years in New York, but this is the first time passengers have been able to book seats on them. All of which seems a pretty good hint from the transport department to get your reservations now.
