    AN IMPORTANT STAGE IN AUSTRALIA'S SNOWY RIVER SCHEME WAS PASSED IN DECEMBER 1963 WHEN THE COMMISSIONER FOR THE SCHEME SIR WILLIAM HUDSON. TRIGGERED THE BREAKTHROUGH OF THE MURRAY PORTION OF THE SCHEME, AND IT WILL ULTIMATELY FEED WATER FROM LAKE EUCUMBEBE, JUNDABYNE AND ISLAND BEND - THROUGH MURRAY NUMBER ONE POWER STATION INTO THE HURRAY RIVER. THIS MORNING SIR WILLIAM HUDSON, WENT THREE MILES UNDERGROUND TO TRIGGER THE BLAST. THE NEXT STEP WILL BE TO LINK THE TUNNEL TO A STAGGING DAM AT GEEHI. ONE OPENING TO THE MURRAY NUMBER ONE PRESSURE TUNNEL IS AT BOGONG GREEK...THE ENTRANCE SIR WILLIAM USED THIS MORNING TO GO THROUGH TO THE FINAL TUNNEL FACE.

    AT THIS STAGE, THE MEN WERE ON THE VERGE OF THE BREAKTHROUGH, BUT SEVERAL DAY REMAINED. THE TUNNEL BLACKNESS WAS CRYSTAL CLEAR TO THE PROJECT ENGINEERS - A DIRECT LINK BETWEEN MURRAY NUMBER ONE STATION AND JUNDABYNE. TODAY, THE TUNNEL ON ITS FIRST STAGE FROM GEEHI THROUGH BOGONG GREEK, BROKE THROUGH TO THREE OUTLETS WHICH WILL DROP THE WATER DOWN TO THE POWER STATION FIVE HUNDRED MEN ARE WORKING ON THE 7-MILE TUNNEL.

    AT ONE STAGE, THESE MEN BECAUSE OF THE ASTROCIOUS GROUND CONDITIONS TOOK THREE MONTHS TO EXCAVATE TWO HUNDRED FEET. SIR WILLIAM SAID THAT THE SUCCESSFUL EXCAVATION OF THE TUNNEL MARKED THE END OF THE TOUGHTEST BIT OF WORK OF THE ENTIRE SNOWY PROJECT. BY 1965, WATER SHOULD BE FLOWING THROUGH IT AT THE RATE OF 3 MILLION GALLONS A MINUTE. THE TOTAL COST OF THE TUNNEL WILL BE TEN MILLION POUNDS.
