The United States is currently operating a massive airlift of military equipment to Israel to re-supply the country's war effort. Giant American cargo planes have been arriving there during the past week, and landing at bases which have been put out of bounds to the public.
The C. 140 cargo aircraft which were extensively used in Vietnam, have been airlifting-in American weapons and equipment at five hundred tons & time. On Wednesday (17 October), the United States Government announced that the daily level had been increased to between seven hundred and eight hundred tons a day. A spokesman claimed this was about the same level as Russia was supplying to the Egyptians and Syrians.
This American aid is a valuable addition to Israel's own war effort. In munitions factories, where many of the young male workers have left to fight, the work is now done by women, students, volunteers and men too old to fight.
Much of Israel's arms production is the result of the country's own research and development. Much of it is of very high quality, but the amount produced is not sufficient to maintain the current war effort. Israeli spokesman claim that in one day of fighting in the Golan Heights their troops used up as much ammunition as they did in the entire war of 1967.
