President Urkho Kekkonen arrived in Russia on May 22nd. for a series of trade discussions at the invitation of the Presidius of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was welcomed by the Soviet President, Kliment Voroshilov, and other government and Communist Party leaders.
From Moscow Airport to the Kremlin there was a state drive through streets packed with cheering, waving people. With President Voroshilov, President Kekkonen waved back at the crowds.
Talks between the Finnish delegation and the Soviet government will deal with the proposed rehabilitation of the Saimaa Canal and the construction of an iron works, both in Finland, with Russian aid. Should agreement be reached on the terms of the financial assistance, and the Finnish Government ratifies the projects, this will be the first time that Russia has give help to any Western country.
