  • Description

FOUR NEW GREEK CABINET MINISTERS WERE SWORN IN AT THE ROYAL PALACE, IN ATHENS, YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) WITHIN HOURS OF THEIR APPOINTMENT. THE RESHUFFLE STARTED A MINOR REVOLT WITHIN THE RULING PARTY - SEVERAL DISSIDENTS SAYING IT WAS NOT EXTENSIVE ENOUGH.

THE OTHER THREE NEW MINISTERS ARE MR. JOHN GLAVANIS, AGED 73 (COMMERCE), MR. NICHOLAS ZORBAS, AGED 59 (SOCIAL WELFARE), AND MR. ZISSIS PAPALAZAROU, AGED 54 (MINISTER FOR NORTHERN GREECE).

THE RESHUFFLE FOLLOWED LONG NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN MR. PAPANDREOU AND THE LEADERS OF THE COALITION FORMING THE UNION OF CENTRE PARTY. THE PARTY HOLDS 171 OF PARLIAMENT'S 300 SEATS. THE REBELS AT THE MOMENT NUMBER TWELVE, WHICH MEANS THE GOVERNMENT STILL RETAINS A MAJORITY, ALTHOUGH A SLENDER ONE.

THE APPOINTMENT OF MR. TSIRIMOKOS GIVES HIM A SEAT ON THE NATIONAL DEFENCE COUNCIL. SEVERAL RIGHT-WING MEMBERS, SUSPICIOUS OF HIS LEFT-WING SYMPATHIES, HAVE ALLEGED HE WILL BE A "DANGER" TO PUBLIC SECURITY. MR. TSIRIMOKOS, WHO IS 58 AND FOUGHT WITH THE LEFT-WING RESISTANCE IN WORLD WAR TWO, SAYS: "I AM SURE THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN GREECE WILL DEVELOP ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE, AND DEMOCRACY WILL CONTINUE TO ADVANCE."
