Background: Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti - visiting the Soviet Union - has briefed his Soviet counterpart, Mr Alexei Kosygin, on last week's enlarged Common Market Summit talks in Paris. Signor Andeotti urged the Soviet leaders not to look on the EEC with hostility.
In the past the Soviet Union has regarded the Common Market as a possible future political rival. However, after Wednesday's (25 October) talks between Sig. Andeotti and Mr Kosygin, Italian Foreign Minister Giuseppe Medici said the Soviet leader had shown great interest, no hostility, and appeared to be trying to understand the mechanics of the community.
While on his first official tour of the Soviet Union, the Italian Prime Minister was to visit Togliatta, site of a vast new car plant built with the aid of Fiat. On his return to Moscow, he was to meet other Soviet leaders for discussions on bilateral relations and economic co-operation.
