  • Description

DEMONSTRATIONS CONTINUE TO FLARE IN INDIA'S 'HINDI' DISPUTE. ON THURSDAY (21 DECEMBER) IN MADRAS, HUNDREDS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS ABSTAINED FROM THEIR EXAMINATIONS AND TOURED THE STREETS IN PROTEST AGAINST THE ADOPTION OF HINDI AS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE.

STUDENTS STAGED AN ALL-OUT ATTACK ON POSTERS, NAMEBOARDS, SIGNS, ANYTHING BEARING HINDI SLOGANS. TRAIN SERVICES WERE DISRUPTED, BUSES AND CARS STOPPED AND ANTI-HINDI SLOGANS WRITTEN ON THEM. IN ONE POST OFFICE, HINDI WRITINGS WERE ERASED FROM THREE-LANGUAGE NOTICES (ENGLISH, HINDI & TAMIL). AND CINEMA MANAGEMENTS IN MADRAS HAVE DECIDED TO SHOW NO MORE HINDI FILMS BECAUSE OF THE DEMONSTRATIONS - THEY WILL SCREEN ONLY TAMIL-LANGUAGE FILMS IN FUTURE.

MADRAS IS INHABITED MAINLY BY TAMIL-SPEAKING PEOPLE. SOME HAVE SAID THEY MIGHT SECEDE AND FORM A SEPARATE STATE OF THEIR OWN IF THE GOVERNMENT DID NOT REVISE ITS LANGUAGE POLICY. AND YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) FOUR EXPRESS TRAINS WERE ATTACKED OUTSIDE THE CITY, DEMONSTRATORS SETTING BOTH TRAINS AND TRACK ABLAZE.
