  • Description

Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin of the Soviet Union arrived in Iran on Wednesday (14 March) and was greeted at Teheran Airport by his host, Premier Amir Abbes Hovoida.

It was Mr. Kosygin's second visit to Iran. He had travelled to Isfahan, south of Teheran, in 1968 to see the first stone being laid at the giant Soviet-aided Isfahan steel mill. On Thursday (15 March), he was to attend the opening ceremonies of the mill, presided over by the Shah of Iran.

In return for the Soviet Union's help in building the mill, Iran is sending natural gas to the USSR by pipeline. President Nikolai Podgerny visited Iran late in 1970 to attend the inauguration of the pipeline.

SYNOPSIS: At Teheran Airport on Wednesday, a guard of honour awaited the appearance of Soviet Prime Minister Alevel Kosyoin at the beginning of his official visit to Iran.

Premier Amir Abbas Hovsida of Iran was there to welcome his guest, who had first visited Iran five years ago to see construction begin at the giant Soviet-aided Iafahan steel mill. On the day following his arrival last week, the Soviet Premier was to attend the opening ceremony of the now-finished mill.

Prime Minister Hoveida escorted Premier Kosygin to the viewing-stand at the airport -- national anthems were played and the honour guard inspected. Shortly afterwards the two leaders loft for Teheran itself, where Mr. Kosygin later attended a state banquet and held talks with the Shah of Iran and leaders of the Soviet diplomatic corps.
