    THE FREIGHTER, "EASTERN MARINER", WAS HIT EARLY ON THURSDAY MORNING BY WHAT WAS DESCRIBED AS A VIET CONG TORPEDO AS SHE LAY AT HER MOORINGS ON SAIGON'S NHA BE RIVER, IN SOUTH VIETNAM. WATER FLOODED THE ENGINE ROOM OF THE SHIP, WHICH WAS FLYING THE PANAMANIAN FLAG, BUT SHE REMAINED AFLOAT.

    NONE OF THE CREW, INCLUDING 30 SEAMEN AND NINE OFFICERS, WAS INJURED BY THE EXPLOSION AND THEY WERE SAFELY BROUGHT ASHORE BY MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE NAVY. AT THE TIME OF THE EXPLOSION, THE "EASTERN MARINER" HAD ON BOARD A CARGO OF SOME 400 TONS OF CEMENT FROM TAIWAN DUE TO BE UNLOADED IN SAIGON.
