The Nigerian Commissioner for External Affairs, Dr. Okoi Arikpo, arrived in Abidjan, the Ivory Coast?
The Nigerian Commissioner for External Affairs, Dr. Okoi Arikpo, arrived in Abidjan, the Ivory Coast capital, on Monday (19 March) for a four-day official visit.
The visit marks the effective renewal of normal relations between the two countries.
Relations between them were broken off during the Biafran War. The Ivory Coast was one of five countries which recognised Biafra -- doing so in May 1968. However, following a series of contracts initiated in early 1970, diplomatic relations were renewed in October 1971.
Speaking at a press conference on the day of his arrival, Dr. Arikpo called for co-operation among all African countries -- especially those of West Africa - in both the political and economic fields. He added that, if West African states came together in this way, they would be able to negotiate better with the enlarged European Community.
