Today in the Bavarian capital of Munich it was festival time, as a fanfare of trumpets started off the procession through the streets. The trumpets sounded out from the tower of 'Old Peter' at St. Peter's Cathedral, and were heard by an estimated 500,000 people gathered together for this colourful, historic, ceremony.
The Festival marks the 800th anniversary of the town of Munich, and lasts for ten weeks.
The crowds thronging the streets were so enthusiastic that police were not able to control them. Frequently the procession itself had only a few metres space in which to 'proceed' and the timing of the asynchronous music was put out of order. Still, only a small incident in a ten weeks of the cost of which the start of which is estimated at 460,000 D Marks.
