    OVER 100 CRACK DRIVERS FROM 13 NATIONS ARE CONTESTING THIS YEAR'S INTERNATIONAL LIEGE-SOFIA-LIEGE MOTOR RALLY. THE GRUELLING ROAD MARATHON GOT UNDER WAY AT SPA, NEAR LIEGE, BELGIUM, LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY).

    RATED AS ONE OF THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST RALLIES AND COUNTING TOWARD THE EUROPEAN TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP, IT COVERS ROADS IN SIX COUNTRIES OVER A ROUTE OF 3,000 MILES (5,000 KILOMETRES).

    THERE ARE NO SPECIAL STAGES IN THE RALLY, BUT DRIVERS WILL HAVE TO COVER MANY MILES OF UNMADE ROADS AND MOUNTAIN TRACKS. LAST YEAR ONLY 18 OUT OF 108 STARTERS FINISHED.

    BRITAIN HAS THE BIGGEST NUMBER OF ENTRIES, INCLUDING A CORTINA G.T. DRIVEN BY PAT MOSS, WIFE OF SWEDEN'S ERIK CARLSSON, WHO IS ALSO CONTESTING THE RALLY. TWO JAPANESE HONDA SPORTS CAR ARE TAKING PART FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE AMERICAN FORD COMPANY HAS ENTERED THREE FALCON SPRINTS.
