  • Description

The new leader of Syria, General Al-Assad flew into Cairo yesterday for talks which could lead to his country joining the planned federation between Egypt, Sudan and Libya.

Soon after his arrival in the Egyptian capital, General Assad visited the tomb of President Nasser with members of his delegation.

Later the first session of talks were held at the Kubbah Palace in Cairo. The substance of the talks wasn't made known but it's believed Egypt and Syria agreed to co-ordinate military action which is seen as the first step towards Syria joining in the proposed federation.

Relations between Egypt and Syria seem to be entering a new phase, and it's a more cordial relationship than that which existed before. President Nasser was bitterly critical of what he considered Syria's meagre contribution to the war with Israel. General Assad's regime has indicated that there may be a shift to Syrian policy towards the political stand adopted by Egypt and her neighbours.

Syria was linked briefly with Egypt in the United Arab Republic set up under Nasser's leadership in 1958. It last only three years.
