  • Description

IN RECENT WEEKS SEVERE FLOODING HAS CAUSED HAVOC IN BRAZIL. WATER HAS SPREAD OVER VAST AREAS OF THE STATES OF BAHIA AND MINAS GERAIS IN EASTERN BRAZIL AND 18 TOWNS HAVE BEEN FLOODED. THE FIRST RAIN OF 1963 FELL IN THIS AREA ON DECEMBER 14TH. IT HAS CONTINUED RAINING EVER SINCE AND ALL THE RIVERS IN THIS REGION HAVE BURST THEIR BANKS.

ONE OF THE FIRST EFFECTS OF THE RAINS WAS TO DISRUPT COMMUNICATIONS, AND WHEN OUR CAMERAMAN TOOK THESE SHOTS PLANES OF THE BRAZILIAN AIR FORCE WERE STANDING BY TO EVACUATE BELMONTE IF THE RIVER JEQUITINHONHA CONTINUED TO RISE. ALTHOUGH THIS PROVED UNNECESSARY, THE PLANES WORKED DAY AND NIGHT BRINGING FOOD AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES INTO THE TOWN.

THE TOTAL DEATH TOLL IS REPORTED AS 60 AND SOME REPORTS HAVE PUT THE NUMBER HOMELESS AS HIGH AS 10,000.

ALTHOUGH THE WATERS ARE NOW BEGINNING TO SUBSIDE CIVIC AUTHORITIES STILL HAVE TO COMBAT THE AFTER EFFECTS OF THE SEVERE FLOODING WHICH HAS RUINED THE BEAN CROP AND DAMAGED WATER SUPPLIES.
