TWO DEMONSTRATIONS IN MALTA NOVEMBER 26, UNDERLINED THE DEEP RIFT BETWEEN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE MALTA LABOUR PARTY. DELEGATES FROM THE SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL WERE GUESTS OF MR. MINTOFF, THE MALTA LABOUR PARTY LEADER, AT A SOCIALIST RALLY AT PAWLA, WHILE BISHOP GALPA AND AN ESTIMATED 100,000 ROMAN CATHOLICS TOOK PART IN A MASS MEETING IN VALLETTA, ORGANISED BY THE CHURCH. TO PROTEST AGAINST MR. MINTOFF'S ASSERTION AT THE RECENT SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS IN ROME THAT THE MAJORITY OF MALTESE WERE SOCIALIST.

"MALTA DEMANDS INDEPENDENCE", OPPRESSORS GO HOME", AND "WELCOME TO MALTA SOCIALISTS" WERE THREE OF THE MANY BANNERS DISPLAYED BY THE CROWD AT PAWLA. SPEAKERS INCLUDED MR. TOM DRIBERG, A BRITISH MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, AND MR. IAN MIKARDO, A MEMBER OF THE BRITISH LABOUR PARTY EXECUTIVE. MR. DRIBERG SAID HE AND MR. MIKARDO WOULD DO THEIR BEST "TO INFLUENCE THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT TO GRANT THE RIGHT OF SELF-DETERMINATION TO THE MALTESE PEOPLE". HE REFERRED TO "PAINFUL SLOGANS" - DIRECTED AGAINST THE SOCIALISTS - FIXED TO THE WALLS OF MALTESE CHURCHES. HE SAID HE WAS GLAD THAT ARCHBISHOP GONZI HAD CONDEMNED THE NOVEMBER 24 SHOOTING AT A FIVE-CAR PROCESSION TAKING POLITICIANS TO DINNER IN VALLETTA. MR. DRIBERG WAS ONE OF THE PASSENGERS.

FLAGS FLEW AT HALF-MAST FROM MANY BUILDINGS AND CHURCH BELLS TOLLED IN MOURNING AS AN ESTIMATED CROWD OF 100,000 PEOPLE GATHERED IN GRANARIES SQUARE, JUST OUTSIDE THE CAPITAL, FOR THE ROMAN CATHOLIC RALLY. THEY HEARD A RELAYED MESSAGE FROM ARCHBISHOP GONZI EXHORTING THEM TO PRAY FOR THE ENEMIES OF THE CHURCH AND TO "ASK GOD TO H AVE MERCY ON THEM". THE ARCHBISHOP, WHO IS RECUPERATING FROM AN APPENDICITIS OPERATION, SAID IN THE MESSAGE: "YOU HAVE SHOWN THE WORLD YOUR CONDEMNATION OF SOCIALISM AND YOUR UNIT WITH THE CHURCH". A MESSAGE TO BE SENT TO THE POPE WAS READ TO THE CROWD. IT EXPRESSED THE MALTESE PEOPLE'S SOLIDARITY WITH THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND PROTESTED AGAINST "INFILTRATION OF SOCIALISM IN MALTA".
