Background: Work has begun on the Management Training Centre being built in Abidjan for the Joint Afro Malagasy Organisation, (OCAM), a group of Western African countries and the Malagasy Republic.

On Wednesday (7 February), the Ivory Coast Minister of State and Interim President of the Republic, Mr. Auguste Denise, laid the cornerstone of the 135-million CFA francs (2,250,000 pounds sterling) (5,320,000 US dollars) project.

The building will take up a large section of the university campus in Abidjan. Within a few months, it is due to be open to its first students. The Training Centre is being built for practical training based on modern education in business matters for the people of the member states of OCAM.

Before Mr. Denise laid the cornerstone of the new project, students of Abidjan University staged a brief concert for the party of guests at the ceremony.

SYNOPSIS: Abidjan, and work has begun on the first stage of a multi-million pound scheme to build a college of advanced education for OCAM, a group of West African countries and the Malagasy Republic. The ceremony to lay the cornerstone was conducted on Wednesday by Mr. Auguste Denise, the Ivory Coast Minister of State, and Interim President of the Republic.

Delegates from member states of OCAM attended the ceremony which marked the start of the project to erect a practical education training centre for the people of the member states.

Plans for the centre were first announced in January 1968, but they became a reality when Mr. Denise made the corner stone secure.

Government representatives from France, Chad, Gabon and the Central African Republic were at the ceremony. They were told in the opening speeches that the new centre should be ready for its first student intake in about three months.
