    The immigration of Soviet Jews to Israel was among the most urgent topics raised during the Soviet-Lebanese talks in Beirut on Thursday (December 16). Lebanese Prime Minister Saeb Salam said he feared that the exodus of Soviet Jews would eventually help reinforce Israeli military strength. Soviet delegation leader Mr. Constantin Gerasimov, a deputy chairman of the Russian Soviet Federative socialist Republic, reassured the Lebanese that most of the Soviet Jews seeking a new life in Israel were elderly too old to take up arms.

    SYNOPSIS: A high-level delegation from the Soviet Union arrived in Beirut this week to discuss the Middle East situation with Lebanese Leaders. On thursday, they visited the offices of Prime Minister Saed Salam.

    Mr. Salam with the leader of the delegation, Mr. Constantin Gerasimov, a Deputy Chairman of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The Soviet team in on a wee's tour of the country.

    Their schedule on Thursday included a visit to Parliament, where they were shown round by the Speaker. Earlier the Lebanese Prime Minister had raised the question of the exodus of Soviet Jews to Israel. He was afraid that this would help reinforce Israeli military strength. The delegation assured him that comparatively few Jews wanted to go to Israel, though thousands there wanted to return. These who were emigrating to Israel were mostly elderly -- and too old to take up arms against Lebanon.
