• Short Summary

THE PROBLEM OF KASHMIR... FORMER KASHMIRI PRIME MINISTER, SHEIKH ABDULLAH, PREDICTED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), THAT A?

  • Description

THE PROBLEM OF KASHMIR... FORMER KASHMIRI PRIME MINISTER, SHEIKH ABDULLAH, PREDICTED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), THAT A MEETING BETWEEN INDIAN AND PAKISTANI GOVERNMENT LEADERS TO DISCUSS THE KASHMIR DISPUTE, WAS "NOT FAR OFF".

SHEIKH ABDULLAH MADE THIS STATEMENT LAST NIGHT, AFTER MEETING INDIA'S FOREIGN MINISTER, MR SWARAN SINGH AND LATER PRIME MINISTER SHASTRI.

THE SHEIKH HAS BEEN TRYING TO BRING THE TWO COUNTRIES TOGETHER IN AN EFFORT TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION TO THE 17-YEAR-OLD DISPUTE ARISING FROM INDIA'S REFUSAL TO GRANT A PLEBISCITE TO DECIDE WHETHER THE PREDOMINANT MOSLEM STATE SHOULD BE RULED BY PAKISTAN.

SHEIKH ABDULLAH SAID SOMETHING MIGHT BE KNOWN ABOUT THE DATE OF THE MEETING BETWEEN PRIME MINISTER SHASTRI AND THE PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN, AYUB KHAN, AFTER AN INDIAN GOODWILL MISSION RETURNS FROM A VISIT TO PAKISTAN NEXT MONTH. UNTIL THEN, HE ADDED: "WE MUST SEE THAT THE ATMOSPHERE OF FRIENDSHIP AND AMITY IS MAINTAINED, AND NOT VITIATED IN ANY WAY."
