Kidnapped heiress Patricia Hearst made another appearance in court in San Francisco, California, U.S.A. on?
Kidnapped heiress Patricia Hearst made another appearance in court in San Francisco, California, U.S.A. on Tuesday (23 September) in an attempt to ask for bail to be restored so that she could return home to her parents.
In an affidavit read by her lawyer Terence Hallinan, Miss Hearst told the crowded court that she had been living in a fantasy-world induced by terror since her kidnapping by Symbionese Liberation Army (S.L.A.) members in February 1974. She claimed that she was driven to the brink of insanity and that her supposed conversion to the S.L.A. cause had been forced upon her by her captors.
Bail for Miss Hearst was set at half a million dollars (238,000 pounds sterling) by a San Francisco court last Friday, following her capture by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents on Thursday night, but was revoked by a later court decision.
U.S. District Judge Oliver Carter, presiding over Tuesday's courtroom session, also refused the heiress bail, but appointed a panel of three psychiatrists to examine Miss Hearst following her dramatic claims. He also accepted the suggestion of Miss Hearst's father, newspaper tycoon Randolph Hearst, that an expert in brainwashing techniques, Dr. Chalmers Johnson, join in the examination.
Miss Hearst sat silent in court as her defence lawyers argued that she was mentally incompetent to stand trial because of her experiences as a prisoner. They claim she is "too fragile" to take the witness stand.
Patricia Hearst faces a total of 20 charges in San Francisco and Los Angeles including taking part in the robbery of the Hibernia bank in San Francisco last April...an act she says she was forced into at gunpoint by the S.L.A.
Following the courtroom proceedings, defence lawyer Terence Hallinan read aloud Miss Hearst's affidavit at a news conference in the city. Parts of the statement appear on film and a transcript follows, in two sections. It tells of Miss Hearst's alleged treatment by the S.L.A. following her abduction:
