INTRODUCTION: In the United States, condemned killer Gary Gilmore was shot by firing squad at Utah State prison on Monday (17 January). The execution, which was the first in the United States for nearly ten years, followed a night of drama when it looked as though it might be stopped. At midnight a Federal judge ordered a ten day postponement -- then an appeals court, sitting at a dawn emergency session in the neighbouring state of Colorado, said the execution could proceed. Gilmore, whose death opens the doors to further executions in the U.S., repeatedly demanded to die for the killing of a young motel clerk last July.
SYNOPSIS: The execution took place in an old tannery at the prison, shortly after sunrise. Gilmore was refused a last request to be allowed to stand, ,and died instead strapped to a chair.
