  • Description

FRENCH LEFT-WING PARTIES TONIGHT (4 MAY) MADE CONFLICTING DECISIONS AFTER TRYING TO SETTLE THEIR DIFFERENCES AND SET UP A CREDIBLE OPPOSITION TO THE GAULLIST CANDIDATE, M. GEORGES POMPIDOU, IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS DUE TO BE HELD ON 1 JUNE. DURING THE DAY LEFT-WING PARTIES HELD CONFERENCES IN THE PARIS AREA.

AT ST. GRATIEN, FRANCOIS MITTERRAND, THE LEFT-WING LEADER WHO CHALLENGED GENERAL DE GAULLE FOR THE PRESIDENCY IN 1965 AND RECEIVED 45 PER CENT OF THE VOTE, ANNOUNCED THAT HE WAS NOT A CANDIDATE IN THE ELECTION. HE TOLD A CONGRESS OF HIS CONVENTION OF REPUBLICAN INSTITUTIONS (C.I.R.) THAT HE WOULD BE LOYAL SUPPORTERS OF ANY CANDIDATE REPRESENTING THE DIVIDED LEFT-WING.

    M. MITTERRAND WAS BACKED BY THE ENTIRE LEFT-WING, INCLUDING THE COMMUNIST PARTY, IN 1965, AND RECENTLY HE HAS BEEN IN CONFLICT WITH THE FRENCH SOCIALIST PARTY (S.F.I.O.) OVER ITS UNWILLINGNESS TO ENTER A BROAD LEFTWING ALLIANCE INCLUDING THE COMMUNISTS.

MEANWHILE THE S.F.F.I.O., THE MAIN SOCIALIST PARTY IN FRANCE, WAS MEETING AT ALFORTVILLE ON THE EDGE OF PARIS. ITS SECRETARY-GENERAL, M. GUY MOLLET, HAS RESOLUTELY REFUSED TO COMMIT HIS PARTY TO ANY LEFT-WING ALLIANCE OR BACK ITS CANDIDATE.

AT THE MEETING WAS M. GASTON DEFFERRE, MAYOR OF MARSEILLES, WHO HAD ALREADY OFFERED HIMSELF TO THE PARTY AS A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.

ALTHOUGH THE TWO MAIN SOCIALIST GROUPS HELD SEPARATE CONFERENCES, A DELEGATION OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY LEADERS HELD A LUNCHTIME MEETING WITH M. MITTERAND AND OTHER MEMBERS OF HIS PARTY. M. MITTERRAND'S GROUP AGREED TO A FURTHER MEETING PROVIDED THE SOCIALIST PARTY DID NOT NOMINATE ITS OWN CANDIDATE TODAY.

THE SOCIALIST PARTY LATER VOTED BY A SMALL MAJORITY TO CONSULT THE COMMUNISTS AND OTHER LEFT-WING PARTIES BEFORE ANNOUNCING A CANDIDATE, THEN DECIDED IN A SECOND VOTE TO CHOOSE ITS OWN CANDIDATE.

    M. ALAIN SAVARY, THE PARTY'S OTHER PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATE, WITHDREW, AND THE PARTY FINALLY DECLARED IN FAVOUR OF M. DEFFERRE.

MEANWHILE AT THE THEATRE 347 THE SMALL EXTREME LEFT-WING UNITED SOCIALIST PARTY (P.S.U.) WAS HOLDING ITS OWN CONGRESS. THE PARTY FORMALLY BACKED ITS OWN SECRETARY-GENERAL, M. MICHEL ROCARD, AS ITS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.
