  • Description

Shooting died down in Beirut on Saturday (24 May) after Lebanon's first-ever military Government took office try to restore peace between Palestinian commandos and right-wing Falangists.

But police sources reported five more persons dead in continued small-arms fire, bringing the total to at least 45 in four days of battling between the two groups in end around Beirut.

The surprise appointment of a military regime was made on Friday night (23 May) by President Suleiman Franjieh, who named a new eight-man cabinet headed by the retired security forces chief, Brigadier Nureddin Rifai.

But the new Information Minister, Brigadier Moussa Kanaan, told a news conference on Saturday that the new cabinet had no intention of continuing in office. He said the military would remain in power only long enough to accomplish its mission, which he said was to restore order and security throughout Lebanon. And -- even as a bomb damaged buildings near the American University in Beirut -- Brigadier Kanaan added that the new regime would exhaust every possibility before resorting to force to end the strife between the Palestinians and their right-wing opponents.
