    President Lyndon Johnson officially greeted Barbados Prime Minister Errol Barrow and his American-born wife at the White House on Wednesday (September 11).

    Mr. Barrow arrived in a black Cadillac limousine and emerged with his wife, the former Carolyn Plaskett from the state of New Jersey. They were greeted by U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk.

    President and Mrs. Johnson arrived and the two heads of state reviewed the colour guard called out for the official state visit. After the ceremonies Mr. Barrow noted he was returning the visit of the only U.S. President to visit Barbados, George Washington. He invited Mrs Johnson to his small Caribbean country when the President leaves office in January.

    Mr. Johnson welcomed Prime Minister Barrow to the United States and noted that the Barbados legislature was the third oldest in the Western Hemisphere. He said the United States was happy that the small island nation was a republic and that his policy was to promote free republics throughout Latin America.
