    Background: President Suharto of Indonesia arrived in Paris on Monday (13 November) to start the first-ever official visit to France by an Indonesian Head of state.

    He and his wife were greeted at Orly Airport by President and Madame Pompidou, then driven in state to the Elysee Palace to be met formally by members of the French government.

    President Suharto said he wished to have a sincere exchange of views with President Pompidou as 'the man who plays an important role in the birth of a new Europe, and who carries a personal and deep interest in the economic problems of the developing countries.'
    According to diplomatic observers, the Indonesian leader wants to enlist France's help in whittling down discrimination against his country's goods in the common market. Djakarta is also trying to develop closer ties with Western Europe so as to become less dependent on Japan and the Untied States.

    SYNOPSIS: Making the first-ever visit to France of an Indonesian Head of State, President Suharto and his wife were greeted by President and Madame Pompidou when they arrived at Orly Airport, Paris on Monday. President Suharto spoke of his wish to have a sincere exchange of views with the French leader...whom he described as 'the man who plays an important role in the birth of a new Europe, and who carries a personal and deep interest in the economic problems of the developing countries.'
    During his talks with President Pompidou and the French government, President Suharto is expected to enlist help i reducing discrimination against Indonesian goods in the newly-enlarged Common Market. Diplomatic observers also believe that Djakarta is anxious to develop stronger ties with Western Europe so as to become less dependent on Japan and the Untied States. Indonesia's prime exports with the Common Market in mind are rubber, palm oil, coffee and minerals.
