• Short Summary

MR. JOSEPH SISCO, THE U.S. ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE AND PRESIDENT NIXON'S EXPERT ON MIDDLE?

  • Description

MR. JOSEPH SISCO, THE U.S. ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE AND PRESIDENT NIXON'S EXPERT ON MIDDLE EAST AFFAIRS MET WITH PRIME MINISTER GOLDA MEIR YESTERDAY AFTERNOON (THURSDAY, APRIL 16) FOR TALKS ON THE MIDDLE EAST CRISES AND ISRAELI-AMERICAN RELATIONS.

AFTER A TWO-HOUR MEETING WITH MRS MEIR, MR. SISCO DECLINED TO REVEAL ANYTHING SIGNIFICANT ABOUT THE DISCUSSIONS; HOWEVER, IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED ISRAEL AND REITERATED ITS REQUEST FOR MORE AMERICAN PLANES AND ASKED FOR INCREASED ECONOMIC AID.

THE TALKS WERE THE FIRST TO TAKE PLACE BETWEEN ISRAELI LEADERS AND A TOP U.S. OFFICIAL SINCE PRESIDENT NIXON'S DECISION LAST MONTH NOT TO GRANT, FOR THE TIME BEIN, ISRAEL'S REQUEST FOR TWENTY-FIVE MORE PHANTOM JET FIGHTER-BOMBERS AND ONE-HUNDRED ADDITIONAL SKYHAWKS.

MR. SISCO ALSO TALKED WITH DEFENCE MINISTER MOSHE DAYAN, FOREIGN MINISTER ABBA EBAN AND DEPUTY PREMIER YIGAL ALLON DURING HIS VISIT.

THE NEXT STOP ON MR. SISCO'S TOUR WAS TO HAVE BEEN AMMAN, BUT THE VISIT WAS CANCELLED BECAUSE OF VIOLENT ANTI-AMERICAN DEMONSTRATIONS STAGED BY PALESTINIAN GROUPS ON WEDNESDAY. THE JORDANIAN GOVERNMENT HAS DEMANDED THE RECALL OF THE U.S. AMBASSADOR BECAUSE OF MR. SISCO'S CANCELLATION, BUT A SPOKESMAN FOR THE JORDANIAN EMBASSY SAID THE DEMAND DOES NOT MEAN THE BREAKING OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN JORDAN AND THE UNITED STATES.
