  • Description

On Tuesday (11 February) Chinese communities all over the world will begin the 15 days of celebrations to usher in the Year of the Hare.

In Hong Kong preparations are far advanced. Department stores report higher sales than at the Christmas sale season. Gift-buying is in full-swing.

Among the traditional items for sale are peach blossoms and pots of tangerine trees. Firecrackers have been banned in the colony for seven years. During political disturbances in Hong Kong it was found demonstrators were using the materials from the firecrackers to make explosives.

Across the world in London, the city's Chinese community -- centred on the Somearea -- has decorated streets and the feeling of imminent festivity is close at hand.
